Shadowhunters 3x02 "The Powers That Be" Review

With corrupted ley lines, awkward dates, new rivals and a whole lot of Malec, ‘The Powers that Be’ – written by Peter Binswanger and directed by Peter DeLuise – was certainly awesome episode.

Please be aware that this review is not spoiler free. If you have not yet seen the season 3 premiere, I’d advise you go watch it before reading this review.

NYCC 2016!!

By the Angel, I forgot just how crazy NYCC could get! Sleeping through everything that went on and then spending the day away from home didn't help either - but after a few hours of searching the internet, this is what I have collected! There are a lot of photos in this post so it may take a while to load... I will share videos in a separate post.  Pictures after the break.

Shadowhunters Mid-Season Review

Well, we are officially halfway through season one of Shadowhunters! I've been meaning to do reviews of each episode but I never got around to it so instead, I'm doing a mid-season review, highlighting some of my favourite moments so far as well as a few other thoughts I have!

As with most shows, there are both good and bad moments. Below are some of the things I love the most about the show, as well as some of the things I'm not particularly liking.

Matthew Daddario and Alberto Rosende as Alec and Simon.

These two are fantastic! The entire cast is great, but Matthew and Alberto have really nailed their characters from the moment they stepped on screen. Matt portrays Alec's serious, straightforward personality perfectly and Alberto never fails to make me laugh.

Simon's Vampire Transition

Simon has shown signs of becoming a vampire since the very end of episode 3 and its progressing well - becoming very clear in episode 7. Alberto's portrayal of Simon's confusion and fear has been absolutely fantastic and you can't help but feel for him. (I may have actually teared up during episode 7... I'm sure I'm not the only one!)

Book References

There are quite a few references to the books scattered throughout the series so far and I love when they pop up! One of my favourites is Magnus's "I was alive when the Dead Sea was just a lake that was feeling a little poorly." Harry Shum Jr delivered this line perfectly in my opinion - he brought the perfect amount of sass to his character! There are, of course, many other lines - whether taken directly from the books or alluding to other series by Cassandra Clare - that are great and bring back all the feels we had while reading.

Malec

Magnus and Alec meet in episode 4 and I have to say, Harry and Matt have great chemistry! Magnus's shameless flirting and Alec's seemingly clueless attitude were hilarious. We get a cute Malec phone call in episode 5 and then several little Malec moments in episode 6 - all of which were amazing. I said it just before and I'll say it again, Harry and Matt have great chemistry and are doing a fantastic job!

The Slap (episode 7)

This scene didn't happen exactly the way I thought it would but its there nonetheless and it was great! I'll admit I laughed and replayed the scene a few times. I feel that throughout the season, so far, Jace's lines that are supposed to be funny haven't really been (some have, but not most). I was rather happy when Jace actually made me laugh in this scene! One of my favourite lines was when he said "I have rights!"

Clace Kiss

I'm so happy Clace finally kissed! I loved everything about this scene except for the fact the kiss took place in the middle of the institute - talk about public! If the show follows a certain story line that takes place in the books, the fact this kiss was so public could end up leading to some awkward moments.

There are many other things I love about Shadowhunters but it would take me forever to list everything!

Before I finish off this review, I thought I'd mention a few things I'm not totally liking.

Special effects

Most of the special effects in Shadowhunters are fantastic - I love the way the demons are brought to life, and the wolves - but I'm not really liking the slow motion/fading (whatever you want to call it) effects that are used when the Shadowhunters run/fight etc. It's a little distracting and throws me off. Other than that, everything else is great!

Crowded / Technology-Filled Institute

This judgement is here mainly because I've read the books. I do my best to watch the show with an open mind but there are just some things that have changed that I'm still getting used - one of which is the Institute being filled with technology and other Shadowhunters. I'm slowly coming around though.

What has been your favourite moment in Shadowhunters so far?
